As we reach the end of 2024, we want to take a moment to express our sincere gratitude to each and every one of you. The hard work, dedication, and support you all bring to our school community have made the first half of this year truly remarkable.

To our teachers and staff, your commitment to excellence and care for our students is inspiring. To our volunteers, your time and effort enrich the experiences of everyone here. To our students, your enthusiasm, curiosity, and growth continue to be a joy to witness. And to our families, your partnership and support are invaluable.

Thank you all for contributing to such a positive and successful start to the school year. We look forward to all we will continue to achieve together in the second half of the year.

Wishing you all a restful break and a joyful new year ahead!

Homework Corner

To ensure that your student stays on track over the winter break and prepares for upcoming PAT exams, the Calgary Board of Education recommends that students in grades 4-6 complete  20 minutes of homework per night and students in grades 7-9 complete  40-60 minutes per night.

We also recommend that parents encourage students to continue to read books they enjoy over the break.

Here are some resources families can access to support their students over the Winter Break:

Practice PATs

Practice Tests

Here are some engaging reading activities that middle school students can enjoy at home with their parents:

  • Family Book Club:
    • Select a book to read together as a family. Schedule regular discussions to talk about the plot, characters, and themes, fostering deeper understanding and bonding.
  • Read Aloud Sessions:
    • Take turns reading chapters aloud. This practice enhances fluency and allows for immediate discussion of interesting or challenging parts of the text.
  • Creative Story Mapping:
    • After reading a story, collaborate to create a visual map of the narrative, highlighting key events, character relationships, and settings. This activity aids in comprehension and retention.
  • Character Interviews:
    • Role-play interviews where one person acts as a journalist and another as a character from the book. This encourages critical thinking about character motivations and development.
  • Family Reading Challenges:
    • Set fun reading goals, such as exploring different genres or authors each month. Celebrate achievements to keep motivation high.
  • Themed Movie Nights:
    • Read a book and then watch its movie adaptation together. Discuss the differences and similarities, and which version was preferred and why.

We want all Archers to achieve and reach their highest potential as we prepare to move into the second semester of the academic year.
