  • Pink Shirt Day – Wednesday, February 25th

Pink Shirt Day originated in Halifax, Nova Scotia back in 2008 with two high school aged students that saw a need to be kind while another student was not being treated with kindness and respect. That one act of compassion quickly spread beyond the school. In 2008, British Columbia’s provincial government proclaimed a provincial Anti-Bullying Day in February, and over time the idea of wearing pink to stand against bullying spread throughout Canada and then

internationally. Today, Pink Shirt Day is observed annually in Canada on the last Wednesday of February.

Pink Shirt Day is now a national and global movement that encourages people of all ages to:

• Wear pink as a visible symbol of support for kindness, inclusion, and respect for others.

• Raise awareness and start conversations about why bullying is harmful and what we can do to

prevent it.

• Raise funds for programs that help children and youth build healthy self-esteem, resilience, and safe environments. The Calgary Board of Education recognizes Pink Shirt Day across all schools and offers professional learning and classroom resources that support a strength-based approach to well-being, emphasizing

schoolwide and classroom supports for students. As an organization, through Pink Shirt Day we honour the grassroots act of kindness and reaffirm our shared commitment to reducing bullying and

creating welcoming, caring safe and respectful spaces for everyone.

Promoting inclusion is something that occurs in our schools every day. Check out some of the information and resources available!

General reminders:

Casino fundraising plays a significant role in supporting school initiatives, including student field trips, enrichment opportunities, resources, and programs that directly benefit our students.
    • Volunteering for a casino shift is a meaningful way to give back to our school community while helping ensure continued funding for these valuable opportunities. No prior experience is required, and training is provided.

Over the years, many students have taken part in this opportunity, and families have consistently shared very positive feedback. Some former Sherwood students have enjoyed their camp experience so much that they now return as adult volunteers and leaders.
    • This year, we are pleased to share that funding has been secured for up to 25 full scholarships for Sherwood students to attend Camp Chamisall for one week this summer. Our goal is to support as many students as possible in accessing this experience. Families are invited to indicate the level of financial support they may require. Full scholarships are available for families who need them, and partial support options may also be considered to help extend opportunities to more students.

Update - December 4th, 2025

Dear Sherwood Families,

In keeping with our commitment to provide open communication to families, I’m writing to provide an update on events that occurred at our school this morning.

Around 9:00, a number of people reported a strong odor similar to rotten eggs in the building. School administration called the Calgary Fire Department for assistance and the school was evacuated. Students and staff were safety relocated to Banting and Best School during the investigation.

Crews determined the smell was coming from a drain in one the storage rooms. The issue was quickly resolved and the smell is going away. Students and staff were able to return to the building after approximately 43 minutes and classes have resumed.

These steps were taken to ensure the safety of students and staff. I want to thank students and staff for handling this situation in such a prompt and responsible manner. Through regular and effective fire drills, students and staff were well rehearsed and able to follow emergency procedures effectively.

If you have any questions, please reach out to the school at 403-777-7590.

Sincerely,

Brenna Fraser, Principal

Dear Sherwood Families,

We are so happy to see familiar faces today, considering the circumstances.  Thank you to those families that have reached out with kind words of welcome and support.  This means the world.

I know that there are many questions about classes and extra curriculum and what these will look like moving forward.  CBE principals are scheduled to meet tomorrow and will receive more information then.  We will then pass along the same information to Sherwood families.  In the meantime, should you have any questions, please consult the CBE Labour Action Page.

As we move forward together, our focus is to reconnect, reassure and refocus on supporting learning and wellbeing for all.
