Dear Sherwood Families,
We are so happy to see familiar faces today, considering the circumstances. Thank you to those families that have reached out with kind words of welcome and support. This means the world.
I know that there are many questions about classes and extra curriculum and what these will look like moving forward. CBE principals are scheduled to meet tomorrow and will receive more information then. We will then pass along the same information to Sherwood families. In the meantime, should you have any questions, please consult the CBE Labour Action Page.
As we move forward together, our focus is to reconnect, reassure and refocus on supporting learning and wellbeing for all.
A quick update for Halloween this Friday-we welcome costumes so long as the following expectations are met:
· No masks covering the face
· No weapons or toy weapons
· No mocking of other cultures
· Costumes should be in good taste
Thank you,
Brenna Fraser, Principal

Hello, Grade 6 Families! We had a short week of learning this week. We went on our first community walk this morning, and enjoyed a beautiful fall day.
We continued with our novel study of Hatchet and are starting to learn about the structure of news articles. In Math, we have started plotting ordered pairs and polygons on coordinate planes, and will be investigating translations, reflections, and rotations on coordinate planes. We are continuing to learn about democracy, and building our understanding of the roots of Canadian democracy.
Reminders:
- Return AHS vaccination forms and picture orders.
- Please do not send your students to school until you have received notification from the CBE that the strike is over.
We hope that you stay well in the face of the uncertainty of the strike. We look forward to reconnecting with our students when we return to school.

Hello! We have arrived at the end of September! Thank you to all the families who joined us for Sher-Burger last night - we hope you had a chance to see your child’s artwork while you were here! Their tessellations were up, as well as a project 6-2 did in art class.
We have started a novel study in Language Arts. We are reading Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. We are looking for new vocabulary words and examples of figurative language, such as similes and onomatopoeia, while we read.
Our study of democracy continues in Social Studies. In addition to the history of Canada’s democracy, we are learning about ways to participate as citizens in addition to voting.
This week we also participated in Orange Shirt Day, and enjoyed an assembly with Walter White Bear. Moving forward we are thinking about ways to continue to honour the land.
Students have been sent home with important forms from Alberta Health Services. Please fill out and return the forms as soon as possible.
Reminders:
No School for students on Monday, September 29th, and Tuesday, September 30th.
Return Alex Dental Bus forms by Wednesday, October 1st.
Return Alberta Health Services forms.
Have a great weekend!

Hello, Grade 6 students and families! Picture Day on TUESDAY!!!
Today, we participated in the annual Terry Fox Run. We had great weather and excellent participation. Thank you for sending your students prepared for the day!
In Math, we are working towards designing unique tessellating patterns. Ask your child what makes a design a tessellation!
We wrapped up our mini-unit on Parts of Speech this week. We are looking forward to starting a novel study next week and also starting to practice some story writing skills.
We conducted our first experiment in Science yesterday! We collected water from various sources and recorded our preferences and guesses as to where the water was from. Next week we will graph our results and see if we can see any clear patterns.
We have wrapped up our research on mayoral candidates in Social Studies. We are ready to start studying the history of democracy and how what we have today in Canada compares to what democracy has looked like in other times and places.

Happy Friday, Grade 6 students and families!
We had a great start to our school year and enjoyed getting to know all of our students this week! We started our options classes and learned about school and classroom rules and routines. We also got to know our Learning Lab teachers! All students at Sherwood School will be participating in multi-aged learning groups this year. Learning in these groups will include areas such as well-being, Indigenous learning, and literacy skills. Learning Lab groups will happen 4 times a week and we trust it will be a powerful time of learning and community for our students.
We will be able to start signing out books from the Learning Commons (library) next week. Until we are able to sign out books at school, we ask that students either bring a book from home or choose something from the classroom library to read during quiet reading time.
Upcoming Events:
September 19 - Terry Fox Run
September 25 - Sher-Burger and Orange Shirt Day
